As Earth Day nears on April 22nd, you might be looking for ideas to honour Earth Day. Ideas that can be incorporated into everyday life on a permanent basis. You know, because maybe we should care about the planet all year long. If you are a beauty junkie, like myself, a natural (pun intended) place to look is the beauty products we use every day.
Unfortunately, the trial and error of getting to know which green brands are good AND good for you can be a little intimidating (and expensive). There is also a general perception that switching to green beauty brands means compromising performance and effectiveness. That is certainly not the case with the green beauty brands listed here. These brands provide the results you want without the toxins or animal cruelty. They represent a wide-range of price points too so click the links to learn more about these great green beauty brands.
Tata Harper is a natural, toxin-free beauty brand that sets a very high bar. Tata Harper products are a little on the expensive-side, but they are worth every penny. They are super luxurious and do exactly what they claim. They make your skin immediately feel better. I could go on about so many Tata Harper products, but a few of my personal favourites are the Regenerating Cleanser, Hydrating Floral Essence, Rejuvenating Serum, and Anti-Aging Neuropeptide Blush (which can also be used on your lips).
Juice Beauty is one of the OG (original green) beauty brands, and they truly walk the talk. Their commitment to sustainability continues to grow in 2021 with a focus on eliminating virgin plastics from all packaging. They are super transparent and their products work. From a price perspective, they fall in the mid-high range; but they do not disappoint. My personal favourites are STEM CELLULAR™ Lifting Neck Cream, STEM CELLULAR™ CC Cream, and SPF 8 LIP MOISTURIZERS (these are great value, so moisturizing and the tint is perfect).
Caudalie is another OG (original green) green brand that launched in France with 3 products containing grape seed polyphenols and a commitment to the planet. They have since grown to a full line of face and body care products that continue to incorporate the healthy and healing properties of grapes. Every Caudalie product I have tried, I love. My absolute favourite is their Beauty Elixir. It’s like spraying pure joy on your face. I also love their VinoClean Deep Cleansing Exfoliator, Grape Water and Resveratrol Lift Instant Firming Serum. They also have lip and hand duos that are great value for 2 fantastic products.
Bite Beauty just quietly goes about its business and doesn’t feel the need to wave their green and clean flag. But rest assured, they could. Bite Beauty products are clean, vegan, gluten-free, cruelty free, and charged with superfoods. All ingredients are ethically sourced according to their Supplier’s Code of Conduct and never include their long list of known toxins. Bite Beauty is committed to producing a beauty product “that holds up to the demands of whatever your day throws at you.” I am obsessed with Bite Beauty lip products. I have tried their lip crayons, lip balm, lip scrub, lip stain, and lip mask and they all won me over instantly. If you haven’t tried one, pick one up. You won’t be disappointed. They also have a Changemaker Supercharged Micellar Foundation that I can’t wait to try. It sounds like it’s going to be a creamy, natural-finish, dewey dream. You can even create your own lipstick with an expert in their lip lab.
Pacifica is the perfect gateway brand if you are looking to introduce cleaner products into your everyday collection. They have a full line of 100% vegan and cruelty-free products for your face, body and hair, AND they are fairly priced. Pacifica is very transparent with the ingredients they use and those they don’t. My absolute favourite product is their Alight Multi-Mineral BB Cream. This is BB cream perfection. It’s a lighter coverage that smooths lines and other imperfections and gives your skin a subtle glow. I use it alone or I add a few drops to a product with more coverage. Aside from the BB Cream, I also love their lip balms, face mists and their Tuscan Blood Orange fragrance is my everyday go-to scent. If you like citrus colognes, you’ll love this one.
Milk Makeup products are vegan, gluten-free, and are never tested on animals. They are also very transparent and make their Ingredients Blacklist known on their site. My first experience with Milk Makeup was with their Kush line and it was love at first lip balm swoosh. I received it as a gift and by the time I was half-way through my first tube of Green Dragon, I had purchased another along with one of every tint they had. It was that good. Another stand out product is their Sunshine Skin Tint. The light, dewey coverage is everything you want in a summer face tint, AND it has 30 SPF. What more can you as for? I have also tried the Kush High Performance Mascara and eye brow gel and was quite impressed.
Vapour Organic Beauty is a progressive green beauty brand that has been prioritizing the health and consideration of people and the planet since its inception in 2009. Beyond being plant-based, sustainable and clean, Vapour is also committed to transparency and inclusivity across the spectrums of age, race and gender. Vapour does all this while producing luxury, high-performing green beauty products that have been setting the standard for years. They have some of the best natural foundations on the market that are especially effective if you have mature or dryer skin. Velvet Glow, Soft Focus and Luminous are all incredible depending on your preferred coverage. The Lux Organic Lip Conditioner and Lip Elixir tick all the boxes as well. All that aside, any company that has “Whatever you want to Be. Because fluid and free is our reality” written on their homepage is alright with me.
John Masters Organics was launched in 1994 fuelled by John Masters personal passion for healthy, and holistic living. Now a few handmade products crafted with care over a kitchen sink in New York have become a full line of high-performing, organic haircare, skincare, and body care products. They are also extremely transparent and publish the ingredients of every product on their site along with an ingredient guide, an ingredient glossary, and their ingredient promise. John Masters products are not the cheapest but they are worth every penny if you can spare it. If you have dry hair, the Shampoo for Dry Hair with Evening Primrose, Conditioner for Dry Hair with Lavender & Avocado, and Scalp Follicle Treatment & Volumizer are game changers. They also have a Hair Spray with Acacia Gum & Aloe that is everything you want a hair spray to be. Oh and the Hand Cream with Lemon & Ginger is pretty perfect too.
rms beauty products are derived from all natural, healthy ingredients, and manufactured in a way to ensure “all healing enzymes, vitamins and antioxidants remain intact.” They also guarantee the “highest grade of ultra pure ingredients.” The founder of rms is a make-up artist by trade and she applied the knowledge she gained from her experience to create clean, healthy products that would stand out from the crowd. And they do. I have to start with their Luminizers because they just make you radiate. The original Living Luminizer is a great place to start if you are looking to try just one. If you are into lip balm, you’ll be very happy with their Tinted Daily Lip Balm trio. You should also give their Eye Polishes and Lip2Cheek stains a try too. You won’t be disappointed in whatever you decide to try.
Herbivore Botanicals are easily identified for the cool, clean, apothocary-esque look to their bottles and packaging. The perfect container for the exceptional products they hold. Herbivore Botanicals products are “always free of synthetic ingredients, including dyes, fragrances, and parabens.” It’s difficult to pinpoint which products I like best because they are all so high-performing. Everything I have tried – from their Rose Hibiscus Hydrating Face Mist and Hair Perfume Mist to Emerald Deep Moisture Glow Oil to their Rose Quartz Gua Sha and Amethyst De-Puffing Face Roller – has exceeded my expectations. And they are reasonably priced too. Herbivore just realy gets it right on every level.

Green-washing in the Green Beauty Brand Market
You must be cautious of brands slapping labels like “vegan”, “natural”, or “organic” on their products with no evidence of the brand being so inclined and no transparency of their practices. This is called green-washing and it’s a real thing. Stay alert. If you are unsure if the brand/product you are using (or are interested in using) is truly green, you can check any of the following:
- The David Suzuki Foundation’s Cosmetics and Body Care Guide for information on unsafe ingredients to avoid.
- EWG’s (Environmental Working Group) Skin Deep database for a toxicity assessment by specific brand/product.
- PETA’s Beauty Without Bunnies database lets you search by product/brand to confirm the company does not test their products on animals.
- Leaping Bunny’s Compassionate Shopper Guide helps you source a brand that meets the cruelty-free criteria you are looking for.
Don’t feel you have to change all of your products over at once. As your current products run out, explore green beauty options that are healthier for you and the planet.
