10 Winter Skincare Tips

by Elyse V

Skincare is always important, but some changes need to be made with the changing seasons. Now, we are not talking about completely changing your skincare routine seasonally, but there are some minor tweaks you can make that will have a positive impact on your skin. So, with many long, cold months still ahead of us, let’s discuss our 10 winter skincare tips to keep you glowing and moisturized.

Keep in mind, it's important to dress appropriately for the weather. Wearing scarves, gloves, and hats will all help protect your skin from the elements; and will also, make a difference to your skin.

10 Winter Skincare Tips

1) Sunscreen: Year-round sunscreen is imperative. You can check out our sunscreen round-up to see our favourite choices. Just because you are spending more time indoors doesn’t mean you aren’t getting exposed to the sun’s rays. Sunscreen is a vital part of keeping your skin undamaged, and youthful. It really does preventatively help your skin.

2) Keep your hands and feet moisturized: Winter is a drying time of year, and you need to pay special attention to these areas. So, to help regularly moisturize your feet, here are the 3 best ways I’ve found to deal with dry heels. Also, remember to moisturize your hands after washing them to prevent dryness and cracking. Check out our round-up of some great hand creams if you’re looking for something new to try.

3) Moisturize your lips: The skin on your lips is thin and can easily become dry and chapped in the winter. Here is a list of our favourite lip balms that are helpful year-round. Lip balm is something you should always have with you. It is helpful to have one at your office, in your car, in your purse, by your bed, and it can be a part of your nighttime routine. Since we are all (hopefully) wearing masks and lipstick isn’t really an option (because it gets smeared), a lip balm is imperative.

4) Wash with cooler water: Yes, a hot shower and hot water feels lovely in the cold months; however, it is very drying. We don’t need anything else to dry out our skin, so turn down the temperature and use cool or lukewarm water for washing and showering.

5) Keep hydrated: Drink water. Staying hydrated helps keep you healthy and glowing, so drink water and other hydrating beverages. Just because you’re not sweating in the colder months, doesn’t mean you still need just as much hydration.

6) Use a gentle cleanser: A great gentle cleanser is something you want year-round, but especially in the colder months. If your skin feels tight after cleansing, that cleanser might be too drying. In this case, you need something gentler and more hydrating.

7) Try an oil cleanser: Oil cleansers are very hydrating, gentle, and versatile. They are versatile as you can also use it as a makeup remover too (just soak it on a cotton pad before wiping makeup off). Oil cleansers do not make your skin oily, You just splash a little bit of water on your face, massage the oil cleanser into your skin, and then rinse it off. My favourite oil cleanser is Tata Harper Nourishing Oil Cleanser.

8) Keep a consistent routine: Having a consistent skincare routine is very important, even if it is super simple. You want to maintain your skin and not allow it to dry out and then try to “correct” issues. Yes, you can mix up your routine, but make sure you clean and moisturize your skin daily to keep it in great shape.

9) Moisturize your face: Having a great moisturizer is key. You should use whatever you regularly like and works for your skin. Something you may want to include in your routine if you feel dry during the day is a hydrating spray. You can use it over your makeup or spray it on clean skin. Either way, it helps keep your skin dewy and moist. A great recommendation is the Beauty Elixir by Caudalie. This product is preservative-free, you don’t need to blot it after you spray it, and it is really great for keeping you feeling refreshed anytime. If you are looking for a new moisturizer, here are 5 of the best face moisturizers to keep your skin glowing IMHO.

10) Add moisturizing serums: Hyaluronic acid is a great serum to add to your routine as it helps to increase moisture in your skin and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. If you aren’t into serums, look for products that have hyaluronic acid or an ingredient like it so you get the benefits. If you want to look at the high-end price range, Dr. Barbara Strum has a great Hyaluronic Serum. You use it very sparingly and it really does make you feel moisturized.

These 10 winter skincare tips will help you look your best even when the weather is harsh and drying.
