Regular readers of this blog know that I love beauty products (especially my favourite beauty products). Over the years, we’ve all become more and more aware of toxins in our everyday products, including our beauty products. While I can’t say product ingredients dictate 100% of my purchasing decisions yet, they are a growing consideration for me. That is most true when it comes to my lip products and, in particular, my lip balms. Natural lips balms are the perfect (and easiest) place to go chemical-free if you are looking to try out (or transition to) natural beauty products.
Our lips have some of the thinnest skin on our body and they don’t have oil glands so they need moisturizing year-round. I use natural lip balms every day and they are never far from reach. Like, I have lip balms everywhere – in jacket pockets, purses, makeup bags, bedside table, desk drawers, and various rooms in my house. There are so many great options on the market at varying price points too. It was kind of hard to create this list of 12 of the best natural lip balms. I’m positive there are countless lip balms I’m forgetting about even using that I also loved. Anyhoo, the 12 here are a few of my current favourites (listed in no particular order).
All lip balms on this list are natural and/or organic and vegan unless otherwise stated. I didn’t get into specific ingredients here because I wanted to keep the reviews from a purely user/results perspective. Also, assume they do not have any colour/tint/sparkle/sheen unless otherwise stated.
This lip balm does double duty as it both moisturizes and provides SPF 30 coverage. Many people forget about the skin on their lips when applying face sunscreens. It goes on more like a lipstick than a traditional lip balm but with more moisturization. It’s smooth and makes your lips feel protected and care for. This is a tinted lip balm that comes in a wide variety of colours but Skinny Dip is perfect for a pale every day look if you want only a hint of colour. Also, we are big Coola sunscreen fans too.
This is a favourite of mine. It feels so luxurious on your lips it’s crazy. It is the perfect kind of moisturization too. It’s not too oily that it wears off quickly, but it’s not goopy either. Like, it’s not so heavy or thick that you can’t wait to get it off your lips. It goes on your lips so smooth that I’m sure it’s what Carlos Santana was thinking about. It’s a tiny bit on the expensive side for a lip balm, but I will never be without it. It’s not the one I use ALL the time, but if it’s ever in a face-off with another lip balm – it wins every time. This lip balm comes in a range of tints; however, the Nude Nectar gives your lips just a hint of sheen. Chefs kiss.
Eos, Eos, where for art thou Eos? This is my go-to lip balm and it’s not even a Montague (for those Shakespeare enthusiasts). It is, however, economical, highly effective for dry lips, comes in a wide variety of delicious flavours, and it goes on like a traditional lip balm. Traditional in the Chapstick sense but, you know, without the petroleum (sorry Chapstick). It comes in both a tube and a cute little ball shape thingy that I love. It’s not great for form-fitting pockets, but you know what you’re reaching for. Like, you are not going to have to go through 10 tubes before finding your Eos lip balm. You can also get multi-packs at Costco that are like value +++. I love my Eos. Oh yes I do.
Ok, so this one comes with both a rave review and a little criticism. Apparently, there was a previous version that was not vegan that some preferred over this new vegan version. I have only tried the vegan version and I love it. It’s super moisturizing and in all the best ways. It’s thick, yet not goopy or tacky. It just really lets its presence be known on your lips. Like you never have to question if you applied lip balm. You know it’s there. My main criticism is that it would probably be better served in a pot-style container rather than a tube. It’s a bit on the softer side and it’s easy to over-apply in a tube. If you decide to try this one out, just make sure you don’t crank the tube to advance too much of the lip balm. Just a smidge will do.
Full disclosure, I love all things Kopari. They have a Coconut Calming Rose Toner that makes your skin immediately feel better, but I digress. The Kopari Coconut Lip Glossy is just that – a lip gloss. It’s not a balm so it is, well, glossier but in the best possible way. It’s not goopy (now – there’s that word again) or sticky or tacky. It’s somehow manages to be both light but deeply moisturizing and nourishing. It leaves your lips feeling like soft pouty, pillows and loved. I’ve only tried the clear but it also comes with hints of colour. Plus, it’s reasonably priced and the more you buy, the cheaper the price. Cha-ching!
Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm was one of the first all-natural lip balms that I tried and it’s still in my lip balm collection to this day. It is readily available at local drug stores and has always been reasonably priced. Their Beeswax Lip Balm has always been one of my favourites. I love the slight tingle that the peppermint gives your lips and I also like how moisturized it leaves your lips feeling. Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm is obviously not considered vegan (beeswax). They have a full line of products and some of their products contain animal-sourced ingredients, such as milk, lanolin, honey, royal jelly and carmine. Be sure to read the label if you are vegan. If you are not vegan, then don’t hesitate to pick up any Burt’s Bees lip balms. You won’t be disappointed.
Ok, so I have to start with saying these are sold as a very reasonably priced 3-pack. 1 is clear, 1 is light pink, and the other is berry coloured;however, they are all fabulous and have an SPF. They go on like magic and they leave your lips feeling like they are hydrated, soothed, and protected. They are long-lasting, not greasy or waxy, and smell/taste fantastic. They are slightly smaller than regular, full-sized lip balms, but only marginally so. They are a great value and well-worth the price. I wish I could get a 3-pack of the clear only, but I still love them to bits.
This is one of my personal favourite lip balms. It’s everything I want in a lip balm plus, plus, plus. Where should I start? It’s moisturizing, hydrating, silky smooth, and creates this light barrier on your lips that somehow locks in moisture and makes that feeling last. It’s just pure luxuriousness. It also has peppermint oil in it so it smells/tastes great and gives your lips that tingly, pouty feeling too. It comes in different tints. I prefer the clear (Green Dragon) but I also like the Bubble tint – it kind of takes the colour of your lips and makes it better. I love everything about it except that it’s a little bit on the pricey side (compared to others on this list). Also, I wish there was more in the container. Once you start using it, you’ll want to use it all the time so it goes fast. Hmmm – I’m not sure that’s a complaint.
Even though tinted is in the title, the tint is very subtle. Like it’s almost hard to even detect it. The tint is almost more of an enhancer of your natural lip colour. Even though the Age-Repair Lip Treatment comes in clear, I kind of prefer the slight tint. You really can’t make a bad decision choosing between the tint or the clear because they are both incredible. Grown Alchemist knows what they are doing. This product is very moisturizing. They sort of look and feel like a lipstick, but wear like a lip balm. This is the most expensive lip balm on this list. This is my “special” lip balm. I pull it out for special occasions. It’s the one I slip into my evening/cocktail bag. It’s not my hang around the house lip balm. It deserves to be on this list because it works well and is long lasting.
Here is another of my favourites from this list. I am channelling Stefon from SNL when I say “they have everything.” They are so moisturizing and yet they feel so light on your lips. That feeling lasts long too. They make your lips feel like they have been glazed to perfection by an expert in lip glazing. Even the taste and smell is perfect. I seriously cannot rave about these lip balms enough. Plus, they are so reasonably priced. Given the quality of the ingredients, you’d expect to pay more, yet that’s not the case. I highly recommend you give these lip balms a try if you haven’t already.
This is not a traditional lip balm like the others on this list. I mean, it is a lip balm, but it is so much more. It can be used for chapped lips and also on dry hands, nails and ragged cuticles, eczema, baby cream, cuts, scrapes, burns, wound care, dry/sensitive skin, and even after-tattoo care. This stuff is all-purpose healing. When my lips are a little extra dry, I turn to Doctor Rogers Restore® Healing Balm. I use such a miniscule amount and rub it on and around my lips at night and, by morning, softness and suppleness is restored (I’d say it’s very aptly named). It’s a little more expensive than some on this list, but you use so little of it, it lasts a long time. It’s a great investment and a good go-to for any skin-related/dry lips healing requirements.
This is another of my very favourite lip balms. It is not cheap though. It’s one of the most expensive options on this list, but it almost serves a dual-purpose. Not only is it an incredibly nourishing and hydrating lip balm, but it is also anti-aging as it reduces the appearance of wrinkles around your mouth/lips. It makes your lips feel supple, healthy, and younger. It’s hard to put a price on that if it is a concern for you. It’s completely not greasy either. It’s a high performing, light moisturizer for your lips that is also long-lasting. You (and your lips) will love it. I know I do.
If you are thinking of making the switch to natural products, you can baby-step it and start with any of the excellent natural lip balms on this list. That way you can keep your lips soft, plumped and hydrated without the worry of ingesting petroleum and/or other chemicals/toxins. Seems like a no-brainer.
