We could all use a little pampering in our lives. Something that makes you feel like you’ve splurged on yourself. It doesn’t have to be a big purchase – it can be something small that you can easily use regularly. If this sounds appealing, then a silk pillowcase is for you. You may not think a pillowcase can make much of a difference – I didn’t either. But I was so wrong and today I’m sharing the 4 benefits of silk pillowcases that will convince you too.
My first silk pillowcase was a gift and one side was silk and the other side cotton. That silk side was love at first sleep for me. I used it all the time and it lasted through three or four years of regular washing (according to the instructions) before it showed any signs of wear. It was white and it stayed white, only discolouring marginally after about three years. By the end of the fourth year it did open at the seam but it was fixable. My point is that even though they may cost a bit more, they last. The one-sided silk pillowcase is definitely a more economical place to start – to try them out. I have since moved on to a 100% silk pillowcase as I like being able to flip the pillow during the night, without loosing the benefits of the silk side. Either way, both work and will allow you to reap the full benefits of silk pillowcases.
4 Benefits of Silk Pillowcases
1) Helps reduce bed head:
Hate waking up and your hair is a tangled mess? A silk pillowcase helps reduce bed head, as the smooth surface doesn’t create as much friction as a regular pillowcase. So your hair should be less frizzy and tangled. I have a natural curl to my hair, but straighten it, so when I sleep on a traditional cotton pillowcase, my hair gets very curly and wavy. However, now that I sleep on my silk pillowcase there is only a slight bend in my hair in the morning. The difference in how curly my hair looks with and without the silk pillowcase is night and day. This means it takes less time for me to straighten my hair in the morning, thus cutting down on my morning routine.
2) Helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles:
Again it is the smooth surface of the silk pillowcase that helps stop the formation of fine lines and wrinkles overtime. Also, I’ve noticed that I don’t wake up with pillow creases or marks on my face since I’ve been using the silk pillowcase. Anything that helps your skin now, and in the long run, without having to actively do anything, I’m all for it.
3) Helps keep skin moist:
If you have dry skin you’ll really want to try out a silk pillowcase. The pillowcase doesn’t absorb moisture from your face the same way cotton does. So it helps you retain moisture. If you’re spending time and money on your skin, with products like ones we highlighted in our Clinique skincare and Current Beauty Favourites: March 2021 posts, then you don’t want your pillowcase undermining your skincare routine.
4) Temperature control:
In comparison to cotton, silk pillowcases tend to stay cooler in the summer and warm slightly in the winter. This helps to create a more comfortable sleep experience. Not to mention sweaty matted hair is not something anyone looks forward to waking up with in the morning.
So these are a few of the benefits of silk pillowcases. It really is a game changer that is easy to incorporate into your daily life. I recommend picking a neutral colour or a colour that matches your decor, as it does stay on your bed all year round, so it should be able to blend with your various sheet sets. A silk pillowcase also makes a great gift for any occasion.
