5 Benefits of Dermaplaning

by Elyse V

Before we get into the 5 benefits of dermaplaning, let’s first cover the basics.

What is the process of dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning shaves off the top layers of your skin and, in the process, removes dirt and dead skin cells. It also reduces the appearance of common scarring and fine lines. This quick, exfoliation process also gets rid of that fine/fuzzy hair on our faces (also known as peach fuzz). Dermaplaning uses an open razor blade/scalpel (called a dermaplaning tool) but it is non-invasive and does not hurt.

Dermaplaning should be done in a salon setting with trained professionals. They do sell the tools required to do your own Dermaplaning in your home. Keep in mind that you are working with an open blade/scalpel so professional training on how to hold and use the Dermaplaning Tool is recommended.

5 Benefits of Dermaplaning

1. Low Risk for High Immediate Results

Dermaplaning is considered a low-risk skin procedure because it’s noninvasive and does not involve any chemicals. It is also suitable for most skin types, but it especially benefits dry skin. Although it generally doesn’t cause any side effects, some may experience some redness on the treated areas for 1-2 days afterwards.

The redness is due to the procedure as the process involves sloughing off dead skin layers with a dermaplaning tool revealing healthy, glowing skin that has not been subject to any of the harsh daily realities we face. To minimize your chance of side effect, be sure to use a qualified and trained professional.

Tweezerman Facial Razor for Dermaplaning

  • Provides easy removal of peach fuzz and gentle exfoliation of dull, dead skin.
  • For optimal performance, replace razor blades every 2 – 3 months or as needed; 3 replacement blades included.
  • Stainless steel blades are sanitary, durable and easy to clean.

2. Promotes Collagen Production and Sparks Cell Regeneration

As we age, our collagen production slows down, but dermaplaning triggers collagen production by exposing it to oxygen. Dermaplaning not only exposes younger looking skin but also improves the texture of the skin by sparking skin cell regeneration.

The result of the collagen production and the skin cell renewal, is that moisturizers tend to seep into your skin better making skin look smoother and firmer. This is particularly good for those with dry or uneven skin.

3. Creates Younger Looking Skin and Makeup Looks Better

Dermaplaning removes dead skin leaving healthier skin exposed that looks younger and brighter. Fine lines and wrinkles are even diminished! Removing dead skin cells allows new ones to get to working on making your skin look younger.  Think of it as another means of exfoliating your skin- which we all know is healthy and helful to the appearance of skin.

This exfoliation process leads to moisturizers absorbing into your skin better, but all beauty products seem to work and look better. This includes makeup like foundation and powders.

As Hyaluronic acid-based beauty products are lightweight, they are recommended as a base to your moisturizers and/or primers. Learn more about Hyaluronic acid from our beauty glossary.

4. Prevents Breakouts

Sebum is your natural oil that can cause breakouts when it accumulates in one area. During exfoliation, Sebum is spread out and dead skin cells are eliminated. When dead skin cells are removed, the chance of blocked pores declines making breakouts less likely. Plus, all that dead skin cell removal will make your skin glow!

5. Good for Sensitive Skin

Dermaplaning is perfect for those with sensitive skin because it really is painless. Don’t let the razor/scalpel tool fool you. Even if you are pregnant, Dermaplaning is a great option because it does not use any chemicals. Having said this, Dermaplaning is not recommended for those with inflammatory skin conditions such as:

  • Acne
  • Rosacea
  • Psoriasis
  • Eczema

Dermaplaning brings hair removal to the next level with a little more time, effort, and skill. Have you tried Dermaplaning? If so, what were your results? Did you have them done in a salon or at home? If you were trained, where did you get trained? Please share your experience with our community so we can all have a great Dermaplaning experience.
