6 Easy Changes for Earth Day and Beyond

by Elyse V

I think it’s great that we have Earth Hour, Earth Day, and Earth Month. I think dedicating any hour, day, or month to the planet is a great thing. My only issue with it is that it might be taken to mean that the focus is not needed as much the rest of the time. Like, after Earth Day/Month is done, we’re good for another year and that couldn’t be further from the truth and earthday.org wants to stress that too with their theme to “Invest in our Planet“.

We need to maintain that awareness year-round so we do better and doing better means we have to change.  So, with that in mind, we are sharing 6 easy changes for Earth Day and beyond.  You can read the EarthDay.org 2022 Action Toolkit for more ideas.

6 Easy Changes You Can Make for Earth Day and Beyond

1. Conserve water.

Water is a precious resource and we need to be aware of that whenever the water tap is running. To use less water, we can:

  • Shut that water off while brushing our teeth, or while conditioning our hair in the shower. There is no need to keep it running – we are not using it.
  • Keep your shower length to 5-minutes. Use the timer on your phone to keep yourself on track.
  • Install a low-flow shower head if you can.
  • If you have a garden, keep a bucket outside to collect water that can then be used to water your plants. You can also use a bucket to catch the water wasted while you wait for the water to heat up. That water can be used to water plants too. Don’t keep your sprinklers running in the summer.

2. Reusables all the way

Stop using one-time-use products like disposable bags, cutlery, straws, plastic bottles, and containers.

  • Keep a stainless-steel water bottle, and/or a reusable mug with you at all times so you have them when purchasing a take-out coffee or cold drink. Avoid buying bottled water.
  • Always have reusable shopping bags with you so you are never stuck without and have to use plastic. One plastic bag can take 10 to 100 years to decompose in a landfill.
  • Stop using one-time use plastic products like disposable cutlery, straws, and containers. If you must use a disposable straw, buy compostable paper staws.

3. Cancel receiving printed mail pieces.

Whenever you receive a paper invoice, catalogue, or newspaper, contact the company that sent it and tell them you want to switch to electronic or virtual ASAP. Tell them you want to be removed from receiving any printed material lists they have and switched to the environmentally friendly version. If they don’t have an environmentally friendly option, then start looking for another company so you can cancel with them all together. Don’t support a company that doesn’t care about the planet.

4. Switch to green household products.

Generally, household cleaning products contain chemicals that can harm your health and the health of the planet. Green products are (generally) not harmful to your health, nor are they hazardous to the planet. To help you identify a green product, Clean Water Action recommends you confirm they are:

  • Non-toxic
  • Biodegradable
  • Phosphate Free
  • Recycled content containers or bulk packaging
  • Natural fragrance
  • Contain no dyes, chlorine, or hypochlorite
  • Full disclosure or labelling of “active” & “inert” ingredients.

5. Eat Less Meat.

We must eat fewer animal products. You don’t have to become vegan, but going vegan for at least 1 to 2 days per week would have a monumental impact on our planet. The meat and dairy industries are the largest contributors to greenhouse gases.

  • Even just swapping one non-vegan meal a day for a vegan meal would reduce your carbon footprint by 25%. That’s just going vegan for one meal a day.
  • Eating vegan one day per week is the equivalent of saving 4 months’ worth of showers.
  • The carbon foot print of a vegan is 50% less than that of a non-vegan.

6. Buy Green Beauty Brands/Products.

Traditional beauty products can contain a number of toxins that are harmful to your personal health and the health of the planet. The manufacturing of green beauty products tends to be more responsible to both people and the planet. Luckily, there are more and more green beauty products on the market that perform just as well as the best on the market.

  • You don’t have to change over your beauty products 100%. You can start with green lip balms as you are more apt to ingest lip products.
  • As your current beauty products reach end of life, check out a green replacement option.

RESOURCES.

Keep the following resources handy if you need information on any green initiatives:

Before you get overwhelmed, I’m not talking about sweeping changes. I’m talking about small adjustments to how we do, what we do that will have a positive impact on the environment. It’s all about progress, not perfection. Small acts, when done by the collective, can have a great impact.

Let’s all be the change our planet desperately needs us to be. A good planet is hard to find.
