It’s hard to keep up with all the National Days. I mean, there are just so many of them. Do a quick scan of your surroundings right now. There is probably a National Day for everything you just looked at. I might be exaggerating, but only a little. There is a National Day for everything. And, not to judge, but some can be a little frivolous (ahem Lost Sock Memorial Day). So, while we may roll our eyes at some of the “fun” ones, there are still quite a few we are totally here for… like National Dance Day.
National Dance Day launched in 2007 to encourage people to incorporate dance – that is accessible and inclusive to everyone – into their daily lives. How can you poo-poo something that encourages everyone to shake whatever they feel like shaking; however, they want to shake it? And it all starts with the music. The music has to move you.
It usually starts with a little head bob to the beat and then rolls down to your shoulders, your hips, and before you know it, you are full-on getting down. You just can’t help it with some songs and we’ve compiled a funky little dance playlist for National Dance Day to help kick it off right.
Oh, and it doesn’t matter how well you dance – just dance. Move your body to the music whether you are sitting, standing or lying down. It’s a fun way to get the blood flowing, be active and stay healthy. It is also one of the ways you can take 10 minutes for your self-care.
To help get you started, the National Dance Day team has put together a routine for dancers and non-dancers of all ages and skill and mobility levels. Check out the routine in the video below and feel free to translate the routine however you deem necessary.

Dance like no one is watching and, if they are watching, dance like you don’t give a sh*t that they are watching.
