How to Find the Best Eye Cream for Wrinkles and Ageing Skin

by Elyse V

Over time those little fine lines around your eyes deepen. They go from showing up only when you laugh, smile or squint; to never leaving. I’m not going to pretend there is a cream that is going to take them away nor should there be. They are the result of living life and all the laughing, crying, smiling, etc… that goes with it. There is a badge of honour in them and in ageing. We shouldn’t want to get rid of them. Having said that, we can keep them moisturized and treated and we do that by finding the best eye cream for wrinkles and ageing skin.

The skin around your eye area tends to be thinner, dryer, and a little more sensitive than the rest of the skin on your face. It’s important to find the best eye cream for your specific needs. The eye cream that is perfect for your friend, sister, mother, aunt, etc., may not be perfect for you. There are so many variables that goes into that statement too. I mean, physiology and genetics aside, our skin is also what shields us from the pollutants, germs, etc… surrounding us. It’s all very unique to each individual.

So, even though you may be related to someone, or the same age as someone their eye cream still may not work for you.

When looking for any new cream, you must start with knowing your skin type; so you know what products will work best for you. If you are unsure, do this great Find Your Skin Type quiz to determine if your skin is dry, oily, normal, combination, or sensitive.  It is critical that the products you use are made for your skin type or you will not benefit from their use. They may even have the opposite effect.

According to our 2022 Beauty Product Ingredient Glossary, look for eye cream that has the following key ingredients to help with wrinkles around your eyes:

  • COLLAGEN: Collagen promotes healthy skin texture, structure, density, and overall appearance.
  • ELASTIN: As we age, our elastin levels begin to decrease. Elastin provides structure to the skin and helps it resume shape after stretching or contracting.
  • GREEN TEA: Green tea promotes DNA repair as it contains a powerful antioxidant called EGCG. Green tea is also a potent anti-ageing ingredient when ingested as a tea or when applied to skin.
  • HEMP SEED OIL: Hemp seed oil restores the skin barrier and helps it to retain moisture without clogging pores.
  • HYALURONIC ACID: Hyaluronic acid helps improve skin moisture and reduces fine lines and wrinkles. Also, can soothe redness and make skin appear firmer.
  • PEPTIDES: Peptides help smooth skin and minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • RETINOL: Retinol reduces fine lines and wrinkles and stimulates the growth of new blood vessels in the skin, which improves skin colour. Can also fade age spots and soften rough patches.
  • UBIQUINONE (CoQ10): Ubiquinone (CoQ10) anti-ageing effects helps keep skin firm, plump and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • VITAMIN C: Vitamin C’s antioxidant, anti-inflammatory properties help to improve skin tone and texture. They also hydrate the skin, and reduce signs of ageing.

When trying out a new product, do a spot test. Just dab a bit on your arm or neck and see if it causes burning, or skin irritation. If you have sensitive skin, you should make this a rule of thumb. Irritation is bad. Beauty isn’t pain. Get to know the 4 signs you are sensitive to your eye cream.

As the skin around the eye is thin and tends to be more delicate/sensitive, it’s important to be gentle when applying eye cream. It is also important to avoid putting it on the eye lid and on the eye lashes so the cream does not get into your eye and cause irritation.

Do not rub or drag cream in this area. It is recommended:

  • Apply a small amount of eye cream to your ring finger as this is the weakest finger.
  • Gently pat the cream around the eye area from the outside in as you want to go against gravity. Remember, do not rub or drag the cream.

We hope this helps you find the best eye cream for wrinkles that will work best for your skin type. Just do a little research and you will be able to find the perfect cream within your budget too.
