Full disclosure, I think I have a problem with headbands. Not just any headband but a padded or beaded headband. It can also be braided or have some other embellishment on it. The kind that adds height to your hair. And when I say problem, I mean addiction. I sometimes wear several different ones a day but my clothes stay the same. I’m not a frou-frou girl either. Like I generally don’t like things that would be considered traditionally pretty. I tend to like more edgy gothic’ish styles. Unless it involves a headband. In which case, I’m ok with frilling it the f*ck up.
I have yet to see the hairstyle that cannot be made better with a headband. You know how jewelry can raise an outfit? That’s how I feel about headbands. They can raise a hairstyle. When you’re feeling blah and your hair is just sitting there doing nothing for you, pop on a really great headband. Suddenly you’re an Hadid sister on the runway. For the record, nobody does headbands like Simone Rocha. Nobody does headbands like Simone Rocha. I bowed as I wrote that. Like, I can’t repeat that enough. Unfortunately, Simone’s headbands are out of the financial reach of most of us but luckily there are some other great ones that are within reach.
A FANCY HEADBAND CAN MAKE AN OUTFIT
Zara (for example) has some amazing headbands. Actually, Kate Middleton has even worn a Zara headband to a fancy event. I only know that because of my headband addiction. I remember seeing headlines like “Kate Middleton proves a $34 Zara headband is the accessory of the season” and “Kate Middleton’s $30 Zara Headband Made Her Entire Outfit” and I was like a moth to a flame. Headbands making headline news? I was all in. Then I realized I happened to have the very same one. It’s a black beaded number (in the image below) and it really does make an outfit.

You don’t have to spend $30 or $50 either. Check out the accessories section of most fashion stores or department stores and you’re bound to find some cheaper ones. I bought a bunch of great headbands on Boxing Day that were 50% and 75% off (in Canada the day after Christmas is called Boxing Day and everybody has a sale). I also bought a few from Amazon that were satin, padded and braided and another that was just a row of pearls for every day. By everyday, I mean lounging around the house.
The next time you’re having a blah day, try popping on a fancy headband. Worse case scenario, you’ll feel the same but your hair will look better. Do you have any go-to fashion accessories to lift your outfit or mood? Let us know in the comments.
