You may be wondering why you can’t just buy any old marinade for your steaks. That’s because many marinades contain ingredients with hidden gluten in them, like Worcestershire and soy sauce. When you buy a marinade, salad dressing, or any prepared sauce, you need to read every ingredient to ensure it is truly gluten-free. So be on the lookout for these ingredients and not just labels that say, “may contain gluten” as that generally means there is a chance of cross contamination. Our best gluten-free steak marinade, is based on the Broil King The Perfect Steak recipe. The two main differences are ensuring that you are using gluten-free products and using dry mustard in place of Dijon mustard. I believe the dry mustard mixes into the marinade better as it doesn’t add graininess to the texture, and it’s an easier product to keep in your pantry. Having dry mustard in your cupboard is handier than you might think.
Tip: Add a 1/2 tsp of dry mustard to up the flavour of any Mac and cheese sauce you might make. It adds a subtle depth, that you didn’t know you were missing.
The Best Gluten-Free Steak Marinade
- 4 steaks
- 3 cloves garlic minced
- 2 tablespoons gluten-free Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
- 1 1/2 teaspoons Dry Mustard
- 2 tablespoons gluten-free soy sauce- I like to use VH Low Sodium Soy sauce, which is gluten-free.
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tsp Freshly ground pepper
- In a large Ziplock freezer bag mix garlic, Worcestershire, balsamic, mustard, soy, olive oil, and pepper.
- Close the bag and really shake it up.
- Unzip and add in steaks and shake up again.
- Leave steaks in mixture for at least 30 minutes. If leaving the steaks out at room temperature leave them for no more than 1 hr. If keeping the bag in the fridge, you can keep the meat in the marinade for up to 4 hours. Remember to bring meat to room temperature before grilling.
- Turn and shake the bag often to make sure steaks are well coated, no matter how you’ve marinated them- room temperature or in the fridge.
- Once your grill is hot, oil the grill and cook to desired temperature.
This recipe will produce a restaurant quality steak at home. The meat will be tender and juicy, no matter how you like your steak.
